In my work
as a teacher I have never heard about the expression ”intellectual property”. But
in my ICT-studying I get to know what it means.
A short
definision of intellectual property is: “Intellectual property refers tocreations of the mind: inventions, literary and artistic works, and symbols, names, images, and designs used in commerce”.
Just watch this video and understand more what intellectual property means:
It made me think of a project that some of my pupils did last year. They were to participate in a movie-contest that was created by “Fiskesprell”. The pupils made a short video that couln’t be over 5 minutes. They made the movie themselves, but they had some music on it from different Norwegians artists and some from foreign artists. And they posted it on YouTube, as the contest said that they should. After some time they get an e-mail from the YouTube-crew, telling the pupils that their movie contains music that may be protected by internationallaws and copyrights and that they should made contact with Universial Music Group (UMG). And so the pupils did. They sent an e-mail to UMG, and the answer was clear: the pupils didn’t have any permission to use this music in their movie, and that the movie must be taken of YouTube. UMG did go so far calling the pupils thieves. And so they did. The movie was removed, but then it wasn’t enough time to made a new one, so they couldn’t participate in the contest.
And who were
there to blame? We had a big discussion between the teachers, principal and
pupils. This was something we as teachers should know, but there could also be
more information from the contest. We did learn a lot about intellectual
property, both pupils and teachers. This will never happen again, and this is a
lesion for others to be aware of. In fact, there is illegal to use something someone
else has produced without permission.
